While there have been efforts to legalize online gambling in Alabama, it perhaps shouldn’t come as a surprise that recent efforts haven’t come to fruition, seeing as you can’t even find a state lottery on offer. However, there are a couple of islets of legalized gambling in Alabama if you’re of the legal age to gamble in Alabama, which is 18 years old.
Online Casino in Alabama
You cannot gamble at online casinos in Alabama. As it stands, the “gambling devices” of online casinos in Alabama are illegal. To classify as a gambling device, it has to allow someone to stake value on an unknown outcome, knowing that they could receive value. So, most slots and table games such as blackjack, craps, or roulette aren’t legal under current Alabama gambling laws, and, by extension, neither are online casino games. The only exceptions to the rule are the three casinos run by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, which are limited to Class 2 slot machines and bingo.
Sports Betting in Alabama
You can only bet on the sports of horse racing and, technically, greyhound racing in Alabama. Under Alabama online gambling rules, you currently cannot participate in other types of sports betting. As such, in the Cotton State, it’s illegal to bet on the outcomes of the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Auburn Tigers, or races at Talladega Superspeedway. You also won’t be able to find any land-based legal sports betting in Alabama. Alabama is one of the few states that permit greyhound racing, although there are no longer any active tracks.
Online Poker in Alabama
You are free to play poker with your friends and online in Alabama. As one of the few forms of online gambling that are legal in Alabama, you can play online poker in the Heart of Dixie. If you are 18-years-old or older, you can play at online poker sites that don’t operate from within the United States. Live poker games that are organized by a house are illegal in Alabama. You can still enjoy social games of poker with your friends, but events that see organizers take a piece of the action or profits are banned.
Daily Fantasy in Alabama
It is legal for you to bet on daily fantasy sports in Alabama. Forever the gray area of betting in Alabama, daily fantasy sports are officially legal to play in the state. The first platforms allowed in the state were FanDuel and DraftKings, both of which are still available for you to use. In the DFS markets, you can create your lineups for all of the leading sports in America, including the NFL, NHL, NBA, and MLB, as well as golf, tennis, and NASCAR.
Esports in Alabama
It is illegal for you to bet on eSports in Alabama. The booming computer gaming industry of esports is present in Alabama, with the University of Alabama running a team. However, eSports betting comes under the same Alabama sports betting rules, and so, eSports betting is illegal in the state.
Lottery in Alabama
There is no state or national lottery in Alabama. The rules of Alabama gambling extend to lotteries, with it being one of only two states that cite religious objections to running a lottery. However, a lottery bill is being introduced to potentially create an Alabama lottery.
Horse Racing Betting in Alabama
